The short answer
  1. Height: about 4 to 6.5 cm for long days; higher heels for shorter occasions.
  2. Heel shape: a block heel over a thin stiletto for walking and standing.
  3. Toe shape: round or almond, so your toes are not squeezed.
  4. Insole: cushioning under the ball of the foot, where heels put the most weight.
  5. Fit: try them on later in the day, and take the next size up if you are between sizes.
1 · Heel height

Start with the height.

The higher the heel, the more weight moves forward onto the ball of the foot. That is why a mid heel tends to feel easier at the end of a long day than a tall one.

Low · about 4 cm
Everyday wear and travel
Mid · 5 to 6.5 cm
Office days, dinners, most events
High · about 7.5 cm
Weddings, evenings, shorter wear

2 · Heel shape

Block over stiletto.

A block heel spreads your weight over a wider base, so it feels steadier on MRT stairs and long corridors. A stiletto puts the same weight on a much smaller point.

3 · Toe shape

Room for your toes.

Round and almond toes give your toes space. A sharp pointed toe looks long in photos but can squeeze the front of the foot, and many women feel it by the afternoon.

4 · Insole

A softer step.

In heels, the ball of the foot carries the most weight, so look for real cushioning underfoot. Ours have a soft lambskin insole with extra cushioning underfoot.

5 · Fit

Get the size right.

A lot of heel discomfort comes down to size, not the shoe itself. A heel that is too small pinches the toes; one that is too big lets the foot slide forward.

Questions

Asked often.

What heel height suits a long day?

Many women find a heel of about 4 to 6.5 cm easier for a long day. The higher the heel, the more of your weight moves onto the ball of the foot, so keep higher heels for shorter occasions.

Are block heels more comfortable than stilettos?

A block heel spreads your weight over a wider base, so it feels steadier when you walk and stand. A stiletto puts the same weight on a much smaller point.

Should I size up in heels?

If you are between sizes, take the next size up, and try heels on later in the day when feet are slightly larger. Your toes should not touch the front of the shoe.
